The Xiaomi Mi A3 is the latest addition to the brand’s line of Android One phones. It is also a significant update on its predecessor, with the first major change with its 6-inch AMOLED screen that houses a fingerprint scanner on the screen and obtains Gorilla Glass 5 protection. Unfortunately, the screen resolution had to go down to 1560 x 720 to keep the price of the phone under control. The power of this smartphone is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 SoC that has been combined with 4 GB of LPDDR4x RAM and 64 GB of UFS 2.1 flash storage. For the software, the Mi A3 comes loaded with an almost complete Android 9 Pie operating system.
The rear photography on the Mi A3 is handled by a triple AI camera configuration where we have a 48MP primary shooter that has been paired with an 8MP ultra wide angle angle sensor and a 2MP depth sensor. On the front, a 32MP sensor has been provided in a water drop notch cut for selfies. This device is backed by a 4,030 mAh battery that supports 18W Quick Charge 3.0. The connectivity options on the Mi A3 consist of Dual SIM with 4G VoLTE Bluetooth 5.0, dual band Wi-Fi, IR Blaster, A-GPS, GLONASS, Beidou, 3.5 mm audio and USB Type-C.
The Mi A3 is the third smartphone with Android One that is launched as part of the Xiaomi A series line. This phone also gets a significant update in its specifications, and the most prominent is the change to an AMOLED screen that even supports an on-screen fingerprint scanner. Both the front and the back of the phone are covered with Gorilla Glass 5. The screen measures 6 inches and sports a U-shaped notch on the top. It also has a contrast ratio of 60000: 1 and is rated for a coverage of 102.7 percent of the NTSC color space. The only drawback here is that Xiaomi reduced the resolution to 1560 x 720 pixels, presumably to keep the overall price of the phone low.
Triple AI cameras on the back, 32MP Selfie Shooter on the front
The images are another aspect that sees a significant improvement over the Mi A2 of last year (review). There are three cameras on the back, with a 48MP Sony IMX568 camera with an aperture of f / 1.79 that leads the charge. This is a ½ inch sensor that uses a 4-in-1 pixel grouping to capture more details in bright and dark scenes. The following is an ultra-wide 8MP angle sensor that offers a field of view of 108 degrees. Xiaomi has also included a distortion correction function to eliminate the fisheye effect that tends to appear around the edges of the image. Finally, we have a 2MP depth sensor that helps capture the data necessary for the natural effects of the bokeh.
This rear camera offers AI scene detection that automatically adjusts the exposure and saturation settings depending on 27 different scenes. For video capture, this setting uses EIS to record videos of resolution up to 4K with up to 30 FPS. Meanwhile, 1080p videos can be captured at 30 or 60 fps.
Finally, we have a 32MP f / 2.0 aperture sensor in the front that offers features such as AI face unlock and panoramic selfie. This sensor is also capable of the 4-in-1 pixel grouping technique that allows you to capture more details. In addition, this camera can detect up to 12 different scenes and automatically adjust settings accordingly. The video recording here is limited to 1080p at 30 fps.
Android One Smartphone with Qualcomm Snapdragon 655 processor
The Snapdragon 655 is a relatively new chipset that has been manufactured in the 11 nm process. It offers eight Kryo 260 CPU cores that reach up to 2.0GHz. An Adreno 610 GPU handles graphic tasks. To ensure smooth navigation, the phone is equipped with 4 GB of LPDDR4x RAM and 64 GB / 128 GB of fast UFS 2.1 storage. A hybrid card slot allows you to add an additional 256 GB of storage on top.
Being an Android One smartphone, the MI A3 offers a fairly simple Android 9 Pie experience. This allows the phone to receive operating system updates and security patches faster than other Xiaomi phones running MIUI. The phone also comes with the Google digital wellness control panel that can help users more efficiently manage the time they spend on the smartphone.
Large 4030 mAh battery that is charged via USB Type-C
Keeping the lights on is a fairly large 4030 mAh battery. This cell is charged through a USB Type-C port and is compatible with Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0. All this together with the low-power CPU and the built-in battery saving techniques should allow the phone to last two days on a single charge. As mentioned earlier, the phone comes with a dual hybrid SIM card tray that allows two 4G networks to work simultaneously. Other connectivity options include Bluetooth 5.0, A-GPS, GLONASS, BDS and dual band Wi-Fi. For audio, you get a background speaker. With the Mi A3, Xiaomi has recovered the missing 3.5mm headphone jack on the Mi A2. And as is typical with Xiaomi smartphones, the Mi A3 also comes with an IR emitter that allows you to use the phone as a remote control.
